on the Whittier vote:

from Minneapolis Issues Forum at http://www.mnforum.org/pipermail/mpls/2002-October/017644.html

Congratulations to Whittier residents, who last night overwhelmingly endorsed "No-Build" as it relates to the I-35W Access Expansion project. This is actually the second time the committee endorsed "no-build", as the board delayed action on the first motion until more information was available.

I believe the Access Project represents one of the first wave of increments in a larger I-35W expansion scheme. This belief is reinforced by the information from the Met Council. The Met Council development plan calls for several miles of additional development along I-35 south of the metro, and when some challenged the wisdom of that decision given capacity issues with I-35, the response was that I-35 would be re-built to accommodate. This story was carried by the Star Tribune about a week and a half ago. Why do some Minnesota traffic planners continue to believe that freeways are the only way to move traffic when it hasn't worked elsewhere??
