McLaughlin talks LRT to Downtown business leaders
Downtown Minneapolis business leaders need to back light-rail transit
as an alternative to Interstate 35W expansion for their own good,
Hennepin County Commissioner Peter McLaughlin told members of the
Building Owners and Managers Association (BOMA).
McLaughlin said that business leaders' support for an approximately
$1 billion expansion of I-35W was only a short-term solution that
would encourage further suburban sprawl and economic development.
"A failure to go ahead with light rail in the 35W corridor
will limit the future of Downtown Minneapolis", he said. "I'm
an infrastructure determinist. Building more highways is a model
that will lead to the decline of Minneapolis".
